Leadership of the Coalition of Rotational Nurses and Midwives (CRNM) has asked its members to withdraw their services at various health facilities starting October 1, 2021.
The health workers, who are on a one year mandatory national service said their action is in response to the government’s failure to pay allowances due them, since February this year.
In a letter addressed to the National Labour Commission (NLC), the CRNM said the unpaid allowances has ushered them into untold hardship hence, the decision to strike.
“We humbly write to your office to express our displeasures of our unpaid allowances since the beginning of our mandatory one-year national service in February 2021.
“We the nurses and midwives on rotations in the various hospitals nationwide have come to a conclusion to vacate post and lay down our working tools effective 1st October 2021.
“This is as a result of the unbearable hardship over the months and there has not been any communication to us stipulating the date and month our allowances will be paid.”
In September 2019, the Nurses and Midwives National Service Personnel across the country appealed to government to advance action on paying their five (5) months National service allowance arrears.
According to the group, government had not paid them their national service allowances between April and August 2019 and efforts to get government to start processes for the payment of their allowances have proven unsuccessful.
